A Holistic Approach to Shaving: Products and Tips for Self-Care

Shaving is not just a mundane grooming task; it's an opportunity for self-care and holistic well-being. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, there are always ways to elevate your shaving routine, if it’s something you want to do of course. We hope you feel free to let your hair be if its your preference. However, if you do prefer the occasional shave we can show you the different types of shaving, from legs to the bikini area, and discuss products and tips to help you enjoy a more fulfilling self-care experience.

Dispelling A Few Shaving Myths

  1. Myth, Shaving Makes Hair Grow Back Thicker: This common belief is simply an optical illusion. Shaving cuts hair at the surface, creating blunt ends that appear thicker. Higher-end razors with multiple blades can provide a deep shave, delaying the visibility of new hair growth.

  2. Myth, Shaving Alters Hair Growth: Shaving doesn't change your hair's growth rate. Hair growth is primarily influenced by genetics and hormones. Hormonal changes can affect the rate of growth, but shaving itself does not.

Understanding Hair Growth

  1. Types of Hair: There are two main types of hair—vellus (fine, thin, like peach fuzz) and terminal (longer, thicker, like scalp or pubic hair). During puberty, some vellus hairs can become terminal.

  2. Hair Growth Rates:

    • Eyelashes, Eyebrows, Nasal, and Ear Hair: Grow about a quarter of an inch per month.

    • Leg Hair: Terminal leg hair grows about half an inch per month, while vellus leg hairs grow more slowly.

    • Underarms: Hair here grows in various directions and reaches one to two inches in length.

    • Pubic Hair: Similar to leg hair, it can grow relatively quickly, influenced by hormonal changes during puberty.

Shaving Tips for Different Areas

  1. Legs: Soak your legs for at least ten minutes before shaving to soften the hair. Shave against the grain for a closer shave. Moisturise post-shaving and avoid direct sunlight for 24 hours.

  2. Underarms: Most people shave every day or two in this area. Shave with care, as hair can grow in various directions. Shave at night and skip deodorant to allow the skin to recover.

  3. Bikini Area: This area is sensitive, and daily shaving can lead to irritation. Use a moisturizing shaving gel or cream with aloe and vitamin E. Pull the skin taut for a smooth shave.

Alternative Hair Removal Methods:

  1. Waxing provides longer-lasting results as it removes hair from the follicle. It can reduce ingrown hairs and breakouts. Wax when hair is about a quarter-inch long.

  2. Laser Hair Removal is an effective for light to medium skin tones with dark hair (dark hair and dark skin unfortunately cannot be picked up by the laser and could lead to discolouration if attempted). Multiple sessions are needed, however the long term effects are definitely worth the wait and much more permanent. Avoid daily shaving to prevent irritation and use moisturising shaving products.

Preparing for Shaving and Waxing

  1. Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate before shaving or waxing to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.

  2. Hair Length: Ensure hair is at the right length for waxing or shaving. Trim if necessary.

  3. Skin Preparation: Take a warm shower to soften follicles before shaving. For waxing, hair should be visible above the skin.

  4. Shaving During Shower: Shaving during a warm shower opens pores for a closer, smoother shave. Use a gentle, unscented gel or cleanser before shaving.

Holistic Approach to Self-Care:

  1. At-Home Laser Hair Removal: Consider at-home laser hair removal for a more permanent solution, especially if you dislike having any hair on the underarms, bikini area, and legs. Follow instructions carefully and avoid using on sensitive skin or light hair.

  2. Skincare: Aftercare is crucial. Use natural antiseptics to treat ingrown hairs and keep the skin healthy.

  3. Choosing the Right Products: Opt for shaving products with moisturising ingredients and avoid heavily perfumed options.

  4. Holistic Well-being: Connect shaving to your overall well-being routine. Take a moment to care for your skin and appreciate your body.

Shaving is not just a chore; if it’s something you do regularly, it can take the form of self-care. By understanding your hair growth, choosing the right products, and following these tips, you can turn your shaving routine into a holistic and enjoyable experience. Taking the time to have the hair you want is absolutely part of your holistic body health. Whether you prefer the smoothness of waxing, the convenience of shaving, or letting it grow as long as you want, self-care is about making choices that make you feel good in your skin and by taking charge of your routines you’re doing exactly that.
